Tutor Services

Volunteer tutors provide a minimum of three instructional hours each week and commit to working with a student one year. Tutors are provided with pre-service training, monthly in-services training, access to a variety of on-line instructional resources and on demand technical assistance from staff.

The Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon uses a "just in time" tutor training model. People interested in becoming a tutor contact the office and set up a meeting with the volunteer coordinator. At the initial meeting, volunteers complete an application, learn about the programs and services and discuss their strengths and teaching preferences. The initial meeting takes about three hours.

The second meeting is the "match session." The tutor and the student meet with the volunteer coordinator. The student's assessment data is reviewed, goals are set and the tutor is given instructional materials. At this point, the tutor will determine the level of support he or she requires from staff, or the just in time training need to insure that the student's needs are met. Professional development for tutors is offered in many forms and includes informal meetings with professional staff, on-line tutor training, self study and participation in the monthly in-service training sessions.
